LUNCH BREAK GROUNDS

Plantings – Landscaping

The landscaping around the Lunch Break building has enjoyed numerous benefactors over the years.  Goldman Sachs employees from the Monmouth County area have arrived with bushes and flowers and strong backs and energy.  They planted the tall shrubs around the back perimeter of the lot.  They even came back six years later and pruned the same shrubs back into trim.

Navesink Garden Club of Red Bank members noticed a scraggly tree in front of Lunch Break and offered to make a design for the plantings next to the building.  The design intrigued some members and they donated and planted perennials and then one rainy day three hearty Navesink Garden Club members built and filled the flower boxes at the front door.  The scraggly tree turned out to be a Witch Hazel bush that they cut back and decided to keep.  The Witch Hazel bush gets a yearly review and so far a yearly reprieve.

A local landscaper noticed the flowerbed depths were not in proportion to the building.  He spent a week extending the beds, moving plants and advising on design.

Other heroes of the landscaping efforts are the unsuspecting young people who plan a volunteer day in the air-conditioned dining room and are recruited to weed and dig and rake outdoors.  They are gracious and funny and like all the volunteers greatly appreciated.
