Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
1. Must I sign up in advance to volunteer?
You cannot drop in to volunteer because we need to match up the workload for the day with the number of volunteers coming in. Please call the Volunteer Department at 732-747-8577 or send an email to volunteering@lunchbreak.org to schedule your day of volunteering.
2. When can I come in to volunteer?
We are open:
- Monday through Friday 8:00 - 2:30 p.m.
- Saturday 9:00 - 12:00 p.m.
- Sunday Closed
3. What will my volunteer job be once I get to Lunch Break.
We ask that you come prepared to serve in whatever capacity is needed for the day. We are a donation based organization and we will need to switch you around from place to place depending on what our needs are and what donations are arriving at our back door. We ask that you be flexible and understanding about this.
We have three main departments: Dining Room, Food Pantry and Clothing, plus maintenance. We cannot guarantee you placement in one particular activity or department. Only trained personnel are allowed to cook/ work in our kitchen.
4. What do I wear when I volunteer?
Please wear long pants (jeans are perfect) and sneakers. No open toed shoes are allowed. Please dress modestly. No short shorts or skirts. No plunging necklines and no muscle shirts. Do not wear necklaces or earrings (wedding ring and watch are ok). Leave your pocketbook locked in your car. We have a locker for volunteer coats and jackets located downstairs. We will provide hairnets, aprons and gloves if you are working in the dining room.
5. I’m a student, can I earn community service hours at Lunch Break?
Yes, but unfortunately we close at 2:30 in the afternoon during the week. We welcome and encourage students to volunteer with us during the summer months. You can also volunteer on Saturday mornings or do offsite volunteer activities. To learn more, click here.
